Funny forecast today, started a little off and fairly light but then becoming fresh from the SW and with high tide in the middle of the day I decided the best option might be the River Orwell at Levington meeting up with a mate at 10.30 which gave me enough time to do my exercises in the back garden! The Orwell looked a little uninspiring with the wind probably wsw at this point but to be fair it was switching about all over the place in both direction and strength but I set up and with Robert rigging 5.3 and the 4/5 wingers going for around 5m I took a chance with my 5.5 which proved nice when the wind was up but there was quite a bit of waiting for a gust but I still sailed over three hour covering 27 miles so must have done quite a bit of flying! I was surprised to get up and flying quickly and was getting some lovely gybes down on the corner, all the others sailed up towards Pin Mill where it did look windier. By the time I beat up there it had gone fairly patchy but I hung around and the wind did fill in for a spell and got my best speed going broad sailing back from Pin Mill, the only time I went in was on a tack when the wind suddenly disappeared! With the tide dropping I decided to call it a day and headed ashore as the best wind of the day probably arrived! A couple of moderate days coming but tomorrow is Maeva day so not sure I will get out, maybe early if the wind is there, we are supposed to have a hot air balloon flight tomorrow morning but I suspect it will be too windy again!
